WMS Robotics Program Meetings: Thursdays, 2:45-3:45 PM, Room 214

The Westport Middle School Robotics Program offers students the opportunity to get handson
experience programming robots to solve problems. The Program uses LEGO MINDStorm robots and a
computer program that allows visual programming of the robots. Students can learn how to program the
robots to accomplish tasks of varying complexity. Students can also design and build challenges for
robots to solve. Students will meet every Thursday after school until the end of February. It is anticipated
that there will be a WMS Robotics Showcase in mid December at which students will demonstrate some
of their work.

Students participating in the WMS Robotics Program also have the opportunity to participate in the FIRST
LEGO League problem solving competition. Teams must solve a problem that requires research,
creative thinking, teamwork, and robot programming skills. Due to the short amount of time to work on
the problem, teams need to meet frequently and may have to devote additional time outside of team
meetings. Students interested in being on the WMS FLL team must be willing to commit about 34
hours/week to the team, including attending 2 meetings each week after school. BMS FLL team intends
to compete in a tournament in late November.

Active, hands on parent support is crucial to the success of a FIRST LEGO League team. Please
contact Dr. Cortright (dcortright@westport.k12.ct.us) or Mrs. Matarese (kmatarese@westport.k12.ct.us)
if you are a parent interested in being involved.
