Summer 2011
Dear Parents:
We are pleased to announce that Bedford Middle School will continue a summer reading experience for all students entering grades 6 – 8. Our program is named Bedford Celebrates Reading. Students will be expected to read at least two books over vacation, fiction and/or nonfiction.
We have compiled a list of books that are currently available in the BMS Library and on the BMS website – http://bms.westport.k12.ct.us/lmc/recs.htm. In addition, our BMS librarian, Ms. Hennessey, and librarians from the Westport Public Library are planning to give book talks to students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 during June. We also list several websites below you might access for recommendations:
Outstanding Books for the College Bound
2010 Best Books for Young Adults
Nutmeg Book Award
Intermediate Nominees (for incoming 6th graders)
Nutmeg Book Award
Teen Nominees (for incoming 7th graders)
Teens' Top Ten
2011 Nominees (for incoming 8th
graders)
More booklists to choose from.
These books are suggestions; students may select books that do not appear on the list or are not mentioned in the talks.
Students at each grade level will complete graphic organizers for the two books they have read. Graphic organizers may be found on the BMS website at http://bms.westport.k12.ct.us/lmc/notesfromsummerreading.htm/. We are asking students to keep their graphic organizers and their books. The grade 6, 7, or 8 teachers will tell their pupils when to bring their notes and books to school in the fall. Students will be asked to share their reading with their new classmates in writing and/or as a book talk.
We are encouraging all staff to participate in Bedford Celebrates Reading, and we invite all parents to join us as well! Thank you for your support!
Very truly yours,
Melissa Kay
